Its almost a year now since the Micromax released their outstanding Yu Yureka smartphone. This phone was launched in January 2015 with some breathtaking features and specifications. Some of its specs include Quad-core 1.7 GHz Snapdragon 615 processor, 16 GB internal memory, 2 GB RAM, Corning Gorilla Glass 3, 13 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, 5 megapixel front camera, 5.5 inches capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution, Dual SIM facility (Micro-SIM, dual stand-by) and much more. It was released with Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS which was further upgraded to Android 5.1 Lollipop. The only reason that made this smartphone the most eye catchy was its price. It was priced for less than $135 only. With such low price and amazing specs, it was obvious that the phone will rule over the Android market.
After the release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, every other Yu Yureka user was waiting for this latest update to be rolled on their device. However the company disappointed the users. The only way to enjoy the latest Marshmallow features on Yu Yureka was by flashing unofficial custom ROMs. Although it voids your device warranty but if it is going to make your phone better than why not to give it a try. Today in this article we’ll discuss some simple steps on how to install the latest Cyanogenmod 13 custom ROM based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS on Yu Yureka (tomato) smartphone. All thanks goes to Santhosh M, a recognized contributor from xda community for developing this beautiful ROM.
All the steps should be implemented at your own risk. Neither do I nor the developers of this ROM will be held responsible for any kind of damage occurred to your phone by following this guide. Although it is very rare that your phone will get damaged but still I highly recommend you to implement everything as it is mentioned below.
This Cyanogenmod13 ROM must be flashed only on Yu Yureka smartphone. Installing this ROM on any other phone can cause severe damage. You may confirm your device’s model from Menu–>Settings–>About phone before proceeding further.
- It is necessary to charge battery of your Yu Yureka phone at least up to 60% so as to reduce the risk of interruption during the flashing process.
- Make sure to take a complete backup of every single data on your phone. It may include contacts, messages, call logs, apn settings, memos etc. For the safe side, you may transfer all the data on PC or your phones external SD card.
- It is highly recommended to backup EFS folder present in your phones system directory. This folder contains all your phones specific information such as the IMEI, wireless devices MAC addresses, product code, and much more. If by mistake this folder gets wiped out then your phone will be completely useless & will no longer be recognized by your carrier. Refer our article to backup and restore EFS/IMEI data:
- Make sure you have installed mobile specific drivers on your PC. This is important so to recognize your phone when connected via USB cable.
- Your Micromax Yu Yureka must be Rooted.
- Make sure you have installed latest custom recovery like Clockworkmod (CWM) or TWRP before flashing this CM 13 ROM.
That’s it! You’ve flashed the latest CWM recovery. Lets flash the actual Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow ROM now.
Procedure to install Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow on Yu Yureka:
Step 1: Download both (.zip) package files in a specific folder on your computer. Remember not to extract them.
Step 2: Now using original USB data cable connect your Yu Yureka to computer, and transfer both the downloaded zip files on your phones internal / external storage.
Note: You may even directly download both the files on your phone.
Step 3: Now safely disconnect the Yu Yureka from computer and switch it off. Then boot your device into custom recovery mode. To enter recovery mode, press and hold Volume up + Volume down + Power button together till you enter recovery mode.
As you enter into recovery, the first thing you need to do is to make a nandroid backup. This is highly recommended as every single data present on your phone gets wiped out in the last step of this procedure. Also a complete backup can save your phone in case if it is stuck in the process or is getting boot loops. This nandroid backup takes the backup of your entire operating system along with system data, user data, boot image, installed apps with data, contacts and even the accounts created.
Refer our detailed article for taking complete Nandroid backup / restore:
Step 4: After taking Nandroid backup, you need to clear all the data / cache present on your phones internal memory. For doing so, press back button to enter the main menu of recovery and select the Wipe option. On the next screen tick the data, cache and dalvik cache options and swipe to initiate the wiping process. This will clear all the data & caches from your phones memory.
Note: It is highly recommended to take complete backup of everything before implementing this step.
Let’s flash the actual Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow based Cyanogenmod 13 ROM now.
Step 5: Then select the Install option. As you click on it, you’ll see all the files present on your phones memory.
Step 6: Just navigate to the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow based Cyanogenmod 13 ROM which you’ve copied earlier and select it. On the next screen just swipe to start the actual flashing process. The process will take few minutes to complete. So be patient and wait for it to finish successfully.
Step 7: As the process completes, you’ll see the successful message on the screen. Now again wipe data/cache from your phones memory.
Note: This step is necessary to overcome the boot loops issue.
Step 8: Now you need to install Google Apps (containing Play Store, Gtalk, Gmail, Maps, YouTube and Google Search etc.) similarly as you’ve flashed the Android 6.0.1 based CM 13 ROM.
Note: Do not wipe data/cache after flashing Google Apps.
Step 9: That’s all! Just restart your Yu Yureka by selecting ‘reboot system’ option from the recovery mode.
Note: This first boot will take more time to start than usual.
Hurray! Your Micromax Yu Yureka has been successfully updated to latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow based Cyanogenmod 13 custom ROM. You can confirm the same from Menu->Settings->About Phone.
