Install Android 6.0 Marshmallow on Galaxy S2 i9100 via Cyanogenmod 13 ROM. Google recently released their latest Android version named Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This latest update has started rolling out for the Nexus and Android One devices. Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 is a much old device now whose life ended on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update. Samsung stopped rolling out further updates for this smartphone. The main reason behind this might be the hardware incompatibility of this device. Still the users of Galaxy S2 can experience the later Android versions with the help of third party custom ROMs.

Recently Lysergic Acid, a recognized developer from xda community launched the famous Cyanogenmod 13 custom ROM based on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow especially for Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 smartphone. This CM 13 ROM is compatible only with the international variant of Samsung Galaxy S2 having model number GT-I9100. Do not flash it on any other device or variant as it may cause severe damage. You may confirm your device’s model number from Menu–>Settings–>About phone.

  • Make sure to charge you phones battery at least up to 60% as lack of battery can interrupt the process.
  • It is highly recommended to backup all your data including contacts, messages, call logs, apn settings, memos etc. For the safe side, you may transfer all the data on PC or your phones external SD card.
  • Also backup EFS folder present in your phones system directory which contains all your phones specific information such as the IMEI, wireless devices MAC addresses, product code, and much more.   • Make sure you have installed mobile specific drivers on your PC. This is important so to recognize your phone when connected via USB cable. You can install them by installing Samsung Kies or manually install them from the link given below:
  1. Download latest Samsung USB Drivers.
  • Your Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 must be Rooted.
  • Make sure you have installed latest custom recovery like Clockworkmod (CWM) or TWRP before flashing this CM 13 ROM. If not, then don’t worry just follow the steps given below:

Step 1: Download and copy this latest CWM recovery on your phones SD card.

Step 2: Power off your Galaxy S2 i9100 completely and boot into recovery mode.

Step 3: For doing so, press and hold Volume up + Home button (middle button) + Power button until you land into recovery mode.

Step 4: Using Volume keys navigate to the apply update from SD card’ option and then select this CWM recovery using Home button.

Step 5: After successfully flashing it, return to the main menu and select reboot system now option to restart your phone.

That’s it! You’ve flashed the latest CWM recovery. Lets flash the actual Android 6.0 Marshmallow ROM now.

Procedure to install Android 6.0 Marshmallow on Galaxy S2 i9100:


  1. Download Cyanogenmod 13 Custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100.
  1. Download Google Apps (Android 6.0 Marshmallow).


Step 1: Download both (.zip) package files in a specific folder on your computer. Remember not to extract them.

Step 2: Now using original USB data cable connect your Galaxy S2 to computer, and transfer both the downloaded zip files on your phones internal / external storage.

Note: You may directly download both the files on your phone.

Step 3: Now safely disconnect the Galaxy S2 from computer. Switch off your device to boot into recovery mode. To enter recovery mode, press and hold Volume up + Home button (middle button) + Power button together till you enter recovery mode.

As you enter the recovery, the first and foremost thing to do is to make a nandroid backup. This is highly recommended as disaster can knock your door without letting you know. If you get stuck in the process or get boot loops then you can easily restore your saved ROM. This nandroid backup takes the backup of your entire operating system along with system data, user data, boot image, installed apps with data, contacts and even the accounts created.

Step 4: After taking Nandroid backup, you need to clear all the data / cache present on your phones internal memory. For doing so, navigate to the ‘wipe data/factory reset’ option present on the recovery mode and on the next screen select ‘wipe cache partition’ option. This will clear all the data & caches from your phones memory.

Note: A complete backup of everything must be taken before implementing this step.

Step 5: Now navigate to the Advanced option located on the recovery mode itself. On the next screen select Reboot Recovery  option.

Wait until you boot again into recovery.

Let’s flash the actual Android 6.0 Marshmallow based Cyanogenmod 13 ROM now.

Step 6: Select the ‘install zip from SD card’ option. Then on the next page select ‘choose zip from SD card’ option. As soon as you select this option, it will show all the data present on your phone. Navigate to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow based Cyanogenmod 13 ROM which you’ve copied earlier and select it. On the next page select ‘Yes’ option to initiate the actual Android M flashing process. Be patient and wait few minutes for the process to complete successfully.

Step 7: As the process completes, again select ‘wipe data/factory reset’ option and ‘wipe cache partition’ option from the recovery mode to clear all your phones data & cache. This step is recommended in order to overcome the boot loops issue.

Step 8: Now you need to install Google Apps (containing Play Store, Gtalk, Gmail, Maps, YouTube and Google Search etc.) similarly as you’ve flashed the Android M based CM 13 ROM.

Note: Do not wipe data/cache after flashing Google Apps.

Step 9: Everything completes here. Just restart your Galaxy S2 by selecting ‘reboot system now’ option from the recovery mode. Note that this first boot takes more time to start than usual.

Note: If you do not like this ROM then you can easily restore your previous saved ROM by using the Nandroid backup / restore technique. For doing so, just boot into recovery mode and select ‘Backup and Restore’ option and then on next page select ‘Restore’ option. Then select one of the saved ROM you want to restore.
